:: UPTU ties up with IIT-Bombay to offer free software tutorials ::

The Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) on Tuesday signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay to help thousands of students access various softwares for free and learn them through audio-visual tutorials, that allows them the use of a website IIT-B has developed.

The website (spoken-tutorial.org) is a hub of tutorial classes, coupled with original software of programming, animation, graphics, EDA (electronic design automation) tools, computational software, utility software, software for schools students and others.

The users have to select and download the software, install it and start practicing. "For any help, users can watch the audio-visual tutorials on the website," said Shyama Iyer, National Coordinator, Training, Tutorial Project of IIT-B.

The project called Talk to a Teacher had started in 2011. It is run by IIT-B and is aimed at increasing IT literacy in the country through information communication technology. Supported by the ministry of human resource and development, IIT-B has tie-ups with around 60 universities in the country at the present.

The project team said around 4.5 lakh students across the country are availing these software, which are also available in different regional languages.

Among the free software available on the website, some are very costly and not available in all technical institutions. Officials said access to these software will be of great help to students of academic institutions in remote areas that lack infrastructure.

University officials said they will first organize workshops for teachers in the Noida campus in the first week of December, to train them in conducting virtual or direct classes in their respective colleges, using the software.

UPTU vice-chancellor R K Khandal said, "The university will train at least two teachers of each academic institution affiliated to UPTU. We aim to train at least 700-1,400 teachers." He added that the tie-up with IIT-B will enhance employability of UPTU students in its over-700 affiliated institutions.
