:: UPTU in English classes pact with Cambridge ::

With communicative English becoming a must for most corporate jobs in India these days, the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) has decided to tie up with Cambridge University so as to prepare its students for a career in the private sector.

Officials of UPTU and Cambridge English, an initiative of Cambridge University, met at the technical varsity's Noida campus on Thursday and have agreed to sign an MoU in January. Under the MoU, Cambridge tutors will hold communicative English classes for UPTU students.

The meeting was presided over by UPTU vice chancellor R K Khandal and Angela ffrench, director (South Asia) of Cambridge English.

According to the UPTU officials, students of various colleges affiliated to the technical university are competent but they lack basic communication skills, which is a major drawback. So, the university has decided to go for a tie-up.

The Cambridge English will support UPTU with study materials and also train the faculty members. The university and its affiliated colleges will develop infrastructure for the language programme.

The UPTU has also decided to develop a language lab where the teachers and students will be provided with refresher courses, the officials added. Confirming this, Khandal said that the recommendations of Cambridge English will be placed before the board of studies for the final approval in a meeting next week. "Once the recommendations are approved, we will sign the MoU," he said.

Angela french said that she has made some recommendations on the current syllabus of English language paper of UPTU.

"We found that the syllabus is good content wise but we have made some suggestions on how these can be taught in an easy and practical way as many students come from rural background with little knowledge of the English language," she told TOI.
